There's a moment in your bones when the fire takes over Blood is running heart is pumping as the battle gets closer ❧ Ever since Turtlefang's first visit, Maplestorm's health had steadily declined. At first when he would have visitors, he would put on a brave face and tell them off for worrying about him. By now, the tom could barely lift his head to reassure them. He was too exhausted to really feel anything.
Even the fear of death had drained from the senior warrior's body as the wound festered. The skin around it had turned a sickening colour. He was glad that he'd grown used to the smell based on the reactions of those that entered the den. He barely managed to flick an ear in response when his brother had brought him water that morning.
He thought he heard a commotion out in camp - but he couldn't quite understand it. Had something happened? He tried to adjust to look but the movement simply made him nauseated. He clenched his jaw and clamped his eyes shut waiting for it to pass. It wasn't as though he had anything left to wretch up at this point.

[attr="class","tttop"] [attr="class","ttimg"] [attr="class","ttlineone"]vael [attr="class","ttlinetwo"]medicine cat of windclan [attr="class","ttbody"]Being berated by one of the mollies in the clan the moment she learned about him being a medicine cat was not something Vael had expected as she pointed him in the direction of the medicine cat den. It seemed that the herbs had been covered at the very least, in a small alcove where wind would not touch them. But they were horrendously low. The tom noted he would have to go get some more and replenish stocks once he learned where the best herb gathering places were. The other thing he had found were a couple cats that were injured, one of which was nearly on the brink of death. No wonder the silver molly had almost mauled him the moment he came into camp. Looking down at the orange tabby that was basically a skeleton, Vael looked to the leg wrapped haphazordously with cobwebs, two sticks on either side to signify the leg was probably broken. Without saying a word to the tom, Vael gave a quick nip to the cobwebs so he could see the wound for himself. There was puss leaking from the wound and Vael crinkled his nose in disgust at it. How had this gotten so bad? Pulling away, he grabbed a soaked ball of moss and what he identified as Chervil. Also catching the sight of Broom in the corner of his eye he also grabbed that quickly. The comfrey he found wasn't in good condition so he decided against using it. He would need to see if there were any that could be harvested. Chewing up the Chervil and Broom, he moved back over to the tom, spitting it onto the toms leg where the puss wasn't. Licking the puss away he didn't bother to stop if there was any fight against him. After most of the puss was removed he cleaned the wound with the water before licking the poultice onto the toms leg. Once it was secured he grabbed cobwebs and fresh sticks and wrapped the leg once more. He would need to make sure to check it before sleeping tonight. Moving towards the toms flank he watched the ragged breathing and decided the tom needed a mixture of herbs that would allow him his strength back. Grabbing a couple poppy seeds and more chervil, he added some chamomile and juniper berries. If he was skinny it meant he wasn't eating. Turning to assess Maplestorm once more he held his nose to the others forehead, feeling the heat radiating from the tom as he quickly returned to his mixture, adding some feverfew. Bringing it to lay in front of the cat Vael pawed at Maplestorms face. "Come on, eat these," he said with little to no comfort in his tone. There's a moment in your bones when the fire takes over Blood is running heart is pumping as the battle gets closer ❧ He blinked his dull eyes open to see a massive cat nipping away the wrappings on his leg. Unlike the others who had desperately attempted to figure out what it was they needed to do, this cat seemed focused and prepared. Confusion filled him as he watched the spotted cat work. Was he dreaming? Had some ancient StarClan cat taken pity on the Clan and descended to save the day?
There was a stinging pain as the herbs were applied, and the ginger tom hissed instinctively. He was unable to find the strength to pull his leg away, however, and instead found himself just wordlessly watching as the cat re-wrapped his leg. It certainly looked more like what Flamehowl had done initially.
"Might throw 'em up," he managed to force out, "Don't wanna waste 'em if I'm just gunna..."
He let his words trail off. StarClan forbid Turtlefang was somewhere listening. He didn't dare admit that he expected the end was near when she was around. His sister and brother seemed resigned to lose another sibling. He expected Lightblaze might just retire from the stress at this point. He averted his eyes from the spotted stranger, simply eyeing the concoction of herbs. He recognized the poppyseeds and chamomile, but the rest was a mystery to him. Seemed like a lot, especially if he was just trying to ease his suffering.
"Turtlefang put ya up to tryin'?" He asked weakly.

[attr="class","tttop"] [attr="class","ttimg"] [attr="class","ttlineone"]vael [attr="class","ttlinetwo"]medicine cat of windclan [attr="class","ttbody"]The large tom waited patiently, making sure that Maplestorm was awake enough to even swallow. If not Vael would have to chew up the poultice in order to get him to at least lick it up. The thought crossed his mind that maybe if he let it slide down the toms neck he'd at least cough and come back to life for a moment while choking on the herbs. But he shook that thought away. Maybe he'd try it if Maplestorm made him mad. As he listened to what Maplestorm said, the medicine cat couldn't help but snort. "Well great news. This will make it to where you don't, so get to eating," The brash voice of the savannah came out with little hesitation as he looked towards the orange tom and watching him look over the herbs that Vael had given him to eat. At the mention of Turtlefang, he could only assume that was the silver molly who nearly mauled him to treat Maplestorm. "Ah so that's her name," He said, a slight annoyance to his voice. "Yes she all but mauled me to come in here," He told the tom, moving to busy himself with looking over the herbs. "She seems to care a great deal about you. Figured I'd give it a shot since Barkface told me I needed to be WindClan's next medicine cat," He said, wondering if the name would ring a bell for the tom that was currently laying half alive in Vael's new den. "The herbs set in front of you are poppy seeds for the pain, chamomile for strength and to help your heart keep pumping. Juniper berries to also give you strength and help with stomach pains since you look like you've missed many meals. And based on your comment you're having a hard time keeping anything down. Which is due to the infection and the sickness stemmed from the infection. Feverfew will help with the fever you have, but you'll also need to keep warm," He told the tom. With it being leaf-bare there would only be more harm in the tom being cold. "Chervil for any infection that may have spread from your leg and well. I've heard it helps with nausea during birth so it should help with your nausea hopefully," The medicine cat said, knowing that hopefully wasn't the right word but oh well. He knew what he was doing and if it helped with nausea for one thing, maybe it would work as well for Maplestorm. Once Vael had sorted through the herbs and set aside the morning treatment he would need for Maplestorm he made his way over to where the moss was kept, bringing some to pile it behind Maplestorm. Making it big enough, the tom settled down next to the other, tucking his legs underneath him as he lay enough to brush flanks with Maplestorm and provide warmth. Closing his eyes, he simple sat there, not wanting to sleep just yet as he waited to see if Maplestorm's breathing would even out and if the tom would vocally say he was feeling better. There's a moment in your bones when the fire takes over Blood is running heart is pumping as the battle gets closer ❧ TW: thoughts of suicide
He came close to a sigh as he listened to the huge cat's list, beginning to do his best to chew the herbs before the tom had even finished. If he threw up, maybe he would choke on it and this would finally be over. His thoughts had drifted in such directions far too frequently recently.
He just wanted the pain to be over by any means necessary. If he weren't terrified that Turtlefang or one of his siblings would find him, he might have tried something before he'd grown too weak to move. He wondered which death would have been more traumatic for his most frequent visitors to discover - by his own paw, or the infection that wracked his body.
"StarClan sent ya, huh," The tom mewed tiredly, "Wish they'd sent ya a bit sooner. We lost a few cats before you got here. Not that its y'er fault or nothin'. Mysterious ways I guess."
He'd watched from the other corner of the den while Smallclaw had withered away to nothing. His poor family had been in complete shock. They hadn't been the only family to suffer from the absence of a healer. He really did wish StarClan worked in less mysterious ways sometimes.
"Hope y'er not planning on cuddling up to me, kid," He grumbled as he struggled with his waning consciousness. Poppy seeds really were amazing things, "Not a cuddler... Turtlefang only so she stops fretting......"

[attr="class","tttop"] [attr="class","ttimg"] [attr="class","ttlineone"]vael [attr="class","ttlinetwo"]medicine cat of windclan [attr="class","ttbody"]As he meddled with the herbs in his stores, he looked over towards Maplestorm as he started eating the herbs. That was good at least, the tom was willing to listen to him. They’d lost Smallclaw because the elder didn’t seek treatment with Vael the moment that Vael had appeared in camp. He wondered what would have happened, should he not have come. Windclan was truly in a sorry state and he would hope that Barkface had truly done his best to get Vael to come. Of course, if he had not delayed by taking his mother he would have been here sooner. But he would not leave his mother for dead when she was suffering. He listened to Maplestorm as he struggled with Vael cuddling up next to him. The big savannah just huffed, keeping his position where he was, scooting closer to fully press himself against Maplestorm. “Hush. You’ll deal with this until your fever breaks. Now sleep. I don’t need that molly biting my head off because you wouldn’t listen,” He told the tom as he curled his body around Maplestorm’s smaller one. He’d do this for the betterment of his patient, there was nothing that Vael wouldn’t do to make sure treatment was successful.
