tagged words XXX notes XXX | feeling comfortable surrounded by the smells, sounds and feel of the territory was never something that aloefeather was able to say with confidence. everything was too loud, too jarring, too in his face, and he didn’t care for it in the slightest. his six moons of training, and eight moons as a warrior had done nothing to dispel the feeling of unease that gnawed at his stomach the moment he stepped out of camp. factor in antlercloud leading a coup that ended in bloodshed and a disheveled clan, and aloefeather was even less inclined to want to leave.
but that was the thing about the young warrior: despite ball of worry in his stomach, and the perpetual look of fear on his face, he had still shown up when myrtlesky had assigned him to this patrol. his companions did little to instill confidence that all would go well: hydrangeastem, an older warrior who looked about as approachable as a thorn bush; and dandelionpaw, an apprentice. well, there wasn’t much else that needed to be said there. aloefeather tried not to judge the abilities of others too harshly by age alone, but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t have his doubts about the success this patrol would have.
“where to?” he squeaked out, eyes darting at every creak and moan the forest made around them, which was more so than usual given the wind. this was going to be a long patrol.

Hydrangeastem of ShadowClan
Hydrangeastem wasn't sure if Myrtlesky thought the patrols through too much. After the attack on Shadowzclan, she'd assume that the deputy would send out bigger patrols. Even for hunting. Antlercloud and his goons already proved that they would do what it took to remove the leadership in the clan. Who said he wouldn't take the chance to harm a hunting patrol? To make matters a little less... comforting, there was an apprentice and a young warrior. No offense to them, she didn't think they could intimidate a mouse if they tried. They could surely be a prime target in her eyes.
She glanced at the other warrior when his words pierced through her thoughts. In response, she blinked, wondering who was the leader of the patrol... Perhaps he just wanted to be polite? "Forest," she simply said and walked in that direction. "I'm sure we can find something there." Glancing at the apprentice, she decided to use this patrol to help with training. "Do you smell anything at all, Dandelionpaw?"

[attr="class","sidebar"] [attr="class","icon"] [attr="class","text-area"] The only thought that crossed Dandelionpaw's mind was the Aloefeather was the jumpiest, squirreliest... Was that a word? Nonetheless the most scaredy cat he'd ever seen. Of course he didn't say so out loud.
That'd be rude... Probably.
Even as the warrior spoke the apprentice thought: if mice could speak they'd probably sound like Aloefeather. Even as he opened his maw to mention the forest Hydrangeastem stole the word from his mouth. He still wasn't sure what fascinated him so much about the forest. Maybe because it was his only connection to his mother?
The wondering question made him frown thoughtfully. His wandering mind was pulled back to the present by the older warrior as she questioned whether he could smell anything.
"Oh!" he chirped in realization before opening his maw to take in the scents around him.
"Hm.... lotsa dead leaves for sure," he responded with brutal honesty.
"Oh.. you probably meant prey, right? Can we go huntin'?" the large tom questioned as he followed after the two. Despite still carrying the -paw in his name he was already 14 moons old and practically a hulking giant compared to the little scraggly kit that had been brought to Mothwing all those moons ago. tagged words XXX notes XXX | though he tried to stifle it, aloefeather nonetheless breathed a sigh of relief when hydrangeastem took control and gave them a destination for their patrol. he knew the forest well, but that wasn’t exactly comforting given the state of things. the she-cat seemed well equipped to handle anything that the forest might through the small patrol, and even if aloefeather failed to produce anything, there were still two other cats that could salvage the hunting party. now all he needed to do was make there without making too big a fool of himself.
he allowed himself to look at the large pale furred apprentice as he responded to the molly’s question, and he smiled lightly. there smell of dead leaves was quite prominent in this area, so the tom wasn’t wrong there. it was good that he had answered the question truthfully and hadn’t tried to force an answer that he thought the other warrior was looking for. aloefeather decided that he liked dandelionpaw, he seemed like a genuine type of cat. the jury was still out on their third companion.
“i, i think hunting is the plan, right hydrangeastem?” he said, once more deflecting to the older molly. the last thing he wanted to do was step on anybodies toes, especially someone that was older than him.

Hydrangeastem of ShadowClan
Hydrangeastem was beginning to think that it was best if she led the patrol instead of Aloefeather. They barely started and he proved to lack the leadership skills to lead. He was too nervous and skittish to provide confidence to the group. Dandelionpaw, an apprentice, held more confidence than the other tom. If she had to pick between them to lead a patrol, she'd pick him over the warrior. It was sad to say, but it was the truth.
The light colored molly stared at the big apprentice when he said that he smelled leaves. Was he being sarcastic or airheaded? Who was his mentor again? Did he ever catch on what others meant when they asked for smell during a patrol? The molly was about to reply when Aloefeather spoke. She held a sigh, noticing that the tom was deflecting on her again. "We can surely hunt. I'm sure our clan would appreciate having full bellies... especially after that nightmare." She was referring to the rebel attack.
Hydrangeastem tasted the air but got nothing important. Instead of mentioning it, she led the patrol deeper into the forest. "Does anyone smell any prey?" The warrior made sure she specify this time.
